Tacoma Activates New Speed Cameras

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

The City of Tacoma will activate two new automated speed enforcement cameras on September 14, 2026, as part of its Vision Zero initiative to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The cameras will be located on Norpoint Way NE (uphill direction) and SR-509 / Marine View Drive (southbound direction).

During a one-month warning period starting September 14, drivers exceeding the speed limit will receive warning notices instead of citations. After the warning period, violations will result in $145 civil infractions. The City stated these locations were selected due to high speeding and serious crash rates.

City Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh emphasized that following speed limits is a simple way for drivers to improve safety, especially on SR-509 where various vehicle types and unfamiliar drivers are common.
