Tacoma City Council unanimously approved $15,000 in contingency funds for a food access pilot at Tacoma Public Library, sponsored by Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh and co-sponsored by two other council members. The funds will support St. Leo Food Connection in providing summer meals at the Main Library and healthy snacks at three additional branches, with plans to explore a pop-up pantry.
The initiative aims to increase access to nutritious food for children and families in places where they already gather, addressing growing community needs. Library Director Amita Lonial stated the partnership combats hunger while strengthening community ties. The project aligns with the City Council's 2024 Urban Design Project Review process, though this specific pilot is separate from that framework.
