State forester George Geissler has issued a 'ready reserve' call for qualified firefighting personnel as 45 large fires burn over 1.8 million acres across Washington and Oregon, according to a public notice from August 3, 2026.
Geissler stated that 'We're going to have a long year ahead,' with no relief expected from meteorologists. Oregon has activated a statewide emergency response with Governor Tina Kotek's June executive order, and state forester Kacey KC noted that Oregon is currently No. 1 on the national priority list for firefighting resources.
The state is requesting employees with qualifications to serve as strike team leaders, task force leaders, division supervisors, aviation positions, engine bosses, and heavy equipment operators.
